As real estate developers, we can make the world a better place. I do not say this lightly. I run a real estate development company that self-performs much of the construction work on our properties. I have employees and suppliers who depend on our payments, overhead I must cover and taxes to pay, and I take those financial responsibilities as seriously as any businessperson. But those obligations, together with meeting the needs of our tenants and buyers, inspire me to look at the big picture of what we as developers do and how we impact the communities we work in. What and how we build matters to our customers’ quality of life, the communities we live and work in, and even the future of our world.
While there may always be a market for suburban homes with yards and picket fences, there is an increasing hunger for well-balanced urban communities. Well-balanced urban communities can provide all or some of the following: access to alternative and public transportation, green space, communal space, public art or art exhibit space, mixed use retail/office/living, housing in a variety of sizes and prices, green living features such as environmentally friendly building materials, access to locally grown food and locally produced goods, etc. One of the main ways in which a well-balanced urban community is both user-friendly and environmentally friendly is in transportation.
